[SEMU-YÉOL LECTURE] 2017 September

Hidden Wonders of Korea – Scientific Wisdom to benefit the all mankind

Lecturer: Lim Young Hee
Director of Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project

This lecture will present a glimpse of the many ‘hidden’ wonders in Korean historical legacies. We will show short films on Korean cultural heritage made by KSCPP, a non-profit organization staffed by volunteers. After the presentation, the audience will be invited to try on the traditional Hanbok (Korean dress), and perform Sebae (deep bow, salutation).

Brief introduction about the short films:

-A Bronze Mirror: an examination of breathtaking nanotechnology from 2,400 years ago,

specifically a palm-sized mirror with engravings of 13,000 parallel lines that are merely 0.3mm apart

-Astronomy: astronomy is the world's oldest academic discipline, and in fact, Korean astronomy is as old as the country itself. We can trace its history to the detailed star maps of the Dolmen, and in the elegant symbolism of the Chumseongdae observatory that predates Mesopotamia - widely seen as the birthplace of astronomy – by some 1,800 years. Korea's legacy in this field bears testament to the country's profound reverence for the Heavens.

-King Sejong the Great: the great hero who lived for his people out of deep devotion to them and established the strong foundation for development in fields of agricultural science, meteorology, astronomy and

time-keeping devices and more!

*This lecture will relate to the next Walking Lecture in October. (near Gyeongbokgung Palace)
